Cost of cyber incidents for Australian SMEs continues to rise sharply
Insurance Business Magazine I Oct 7, 2025
A recent report shows the financial toll of cyber incidents on Australian small and medium enterprises has nearly doubled in just three years, with the average cost of a ransomware attack increasing from ~A$106,500 in 2021 to ~A$207,600 in 2024. The rise reflects not only higher ransom demands but also the wider impact of downtime, lost productivity, reputational harm, and mounting recovery expenses, leaving SMEs increasingly exposed to operational and financial risk without stronger defences and response planning.
